  • March 2010 - CASA hosts visiting scholars Dr. Ola Erstad from Norway, Dr. Victoria Qunitero Moron (Universidad Pablo de Olavide Seville, Spain, and visiting graduate student Marco Zuelli (University of Bologna, Italy) at its end of the quarter research meeting at UCSD CREATE. CASA thanks our visitors and is grateful for the global perspective they are contributing to our research.

  • February 2010 – CASA breaks ground on its community garden located at Community Housing Works' Los Robles Housing Complex in Vista, CASA's Environmental Stewardship hub.   • January 2010 - CASA receives a $7500 grant from Wells Fargo to assist our Financial Literacy programming!

  • December 2009 - CASA receives a $3000 grant from US Bank to help support its 21st Century Skills programming

  • November 2009 – CASA attends Del Mar Kiwanis November luncheon at Red Tracton's Restaurant and receives a programming grant to support their Solana Beach site!

  • October 2009 – CASA celebrates twenty years of La Clase Mágica at its 2nd Annual A Taste of Art Fundraiser at the Balboa Park Recital Hall. Emceed by the Vice Mayor of National City, Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, the event featured food and wine tasting, a silent auction (click here to view over forty sponsors), and a classical performance by Flamenco guitarist Greg Shirer.   • October 2009 – CASA recognized by San Diego City Council President Benjamin Hueso, San Diego County Board of Education, The City of Vista, and the City of Solana Beach for twenty years of community programming. Click here to view a few of the letters.

  • September 2009 – CASA's longest running program La Clase Mágica is a national Excelencia in Education nominee. CASA Executive Director, Caroline Collins, travels to Washington D.C. to attend the Fourth Annual Celebración de Excelencia, Excelencia in Education's yearly event in conjunction with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at the U.S. Capitol Visitor's Center and Congressional Hall, where Martha Kanter, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, among others, spoke and continued to encourage all those involved in promoting excellence in education for all.

  • September 2009 – CASA Receives $4,000 programming grant from Casa Familiar in San Ysidro to assist in the development of CASA's new life-skills project, Hubs of Innovation and its Financial Literacy curriculum.

  • September 2009 – CASA's Founder and C.E.O., Dr. Olga A. Vásquez, is honored by San Diego Magazine as a Woman of the Year Finalist at their annual Women Who Move the City Event at USD's picturesque Garden of the Sea.

  • September 2009 – CASA Receives $40,000 Research Grant from joint venture funding between The Rokenbok Foundation and The San Diego Foundation to conduct a CASA / UCSD pilot study researching optimal after-school learning strategies that increase the achievement of low-income and minority children in math and science.

  • September 2009 – CASA's new life-skills project, Hubs of Innovation, receives approval from Community Housing Works' Los Robles Affordable Housing Complex's Board of Directors to break ground on a community garden. This garden, which will be facilitated in partnership with Victory Gardens San Diego (www.victorygardenssandiego.com), will be a vital hands-on component of CASA's Hubs of Innovation Environmental Protection curriculum.

  • September 2009 – CASA attends the Del Mar Kiwanis Day at the Races Annual Fundraiser where CASA's La Clase Mágica is honored as a funding recipient among other notable local charities such as Phoenix House.

  • August 2009 – CASA Receives a $10,000 grant from The BRAVO Foundation to assist in formal grant seeking and to help towards the construction of CASA's Hubs of Innovation Online Community Networking & Educational Gaming site!

  • July 2009 – CASA receives grant from Target Stores to help fund El Maga’s Bilingual Story Time and Family Book Fairs at our St. Leo’s Mission location.

  • June 2009 – CASA Receives $20,000 Grant from the Eugene Garfield Foundation to help fund our new Hubs of Innovation project!

  • May 2009 – Program Founder Dr. Olga A. Vásquez presents “Change Infrastructure” paper at the Oslo Seminar in Norway.

  • May 2009 – CASA Receives Grant from Cox Kids Foundation to assist the development and launch of our Hubs of Innovation project!

  • May 2009 – CASA Receives Community Based Online Learning Grant from CA Virtual Campus and CENIC to fund our new digital literacy hub’s high speed Internet for four years!

  • April 2009 – CASA Hosts Visitors from Three Texas Universities as guest scholars prepare to launch La Clase Mágica sites in their state.

  • April 2009 – CASA Receives Visit From Potential Research Partners From the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden.

  • April 2009 – CASA undergraduate researchers present at BIANACOM’s 16th Encuentro Conference.

  • March 2009 – CASA Is Proud to Announce Its Newest Team Member, Jim Bliesner! Mr. Bliesner (MA, Social Ethics, Boston University) joins CASA as its newest Fellow. He joins us after serving twenty-four years as the Director of the San Diego Reinvestment Task Force, an agency authorized by the City and County of San Diego where he garnered national awards, governmental appointments, and even served as a faculty member at SDSU. We at CASA warmly welcome Jim and are excited for the experience and innovation he brings, especially regarding our new Financial Literacy hub in San Ysidro.

  • January 2009 - Program Founder Dr. Olga A. Vásquez gives Keynote Address on “Lessons from the Community: Multi-literacies and Technology-Based Pedagogies” at UC Davis’s Academic Literacy Project.

  • December 2008 – Del Mar Kiwanis Grants CASA’s Holiday Wishes by visiting our Solana Beach preschool site and bearing the gifts of needed educational materials and supplies!

  • October 2008 – CASA Hosts A Taste of Art: Celebrando Comunidad y Cultura Fundraiser at Balboa Park featuring classical guitarist Greg Shirer, wine tasting, and art auction.

  • June 2008 – CASA Receives Grant from San Diego Foundation to help fund the Fall 2009 launch of our new Environmental Protection Hub!

  • May 2008 – UCSD Chancellor, Marye Anne Fox, visits CASA’s La Clase Mágica at the Casa Familiar Community Center in San Ysidro. The Chancellor spoke with child participants, program parents, and an undergraduate from the UCSD Practicum in Child Development course. CASA was greatly honored by the Chancellor’s visit and support.
